Fine art, landscape and travel photographer David Noton has quietly built up a sizeable portfolio of striking imagery that sells well to both collectors and picture libraries

My photographic challenge is to put a fresh slant on the familiar,” says Dorset-based David Noton, who, alongside the likes of Joe Cornish and Charlie Waite, is growing a reputation as one of the UK’s masters in landscape and travel photography. Having lived on differing continents as a boy and spent the early part of his adult life in the Merchant Navy, it’s the latter discipline that Noton is particularly passionate about. But, like most of us, he finds that variety is not only the spice of life; it helps pay the bills too.
“I resist being labelled, as I guess all photographers do, but on the flip side it’s good to be known for doing something,” he acknowledges. “Obviously there’s a lot of travel photography out there which is why I resist being labelled. I do a lot of panoramic work and landscape, but I also like working with people.”
